Reaching Children, Creatively
"GEMS Children ministry grew to become a full pledged department reaching out to thousands of children in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Nepal.
An old Chinese proverb says,
“Tell me and I will forget
Show me and I will remember
Involve me and I will understand
Step back and I will act”
This is very true in the ministry among children and arts comes to aid in making this possible, in engaging children effectively and meaningfully. Arts play a great part in making the learning for children very interesting. It makes the children enjoy what they learn." writes Mr. Joseph (Children Dept. Coordinator, GEMS) in this article in the Magnifying Glass column of The CALL and goes on to talk about the various forms of art used in the ministry among children and their effectiveness.

English Literature & My Bible Study
"Literature is generally considered as a ‘reflection of life’. A person from a non-literature background (academically), might assume that the study of English Literature is all about romantic poems, never-ending novels, and insipid dramas. But study of English Literature has a lot more to offer that would be helpful for our personal Bible study..." writes Roland Rencewigg (Verbal Faculty, SRM University, Chennai) in this Get Equipped column article of The CALL.

Book Review: Booker Prize Winner “The White Tiger”
"One reason why ‘The White Tiger’ has won the booker prize is, we believe, the real depiction of the struggles of the poor, the oppressed class and their miserable lives. The immorality of the wealthy and greedy, corruption of the politicians, the evils of the caste system, the inefficiency of the police is depicted truly.
Though Arvind clearly brings out the problems of the poor, he does not show a morally and ethically viable way to solve this. This retrospective narration if combined with introspective aspects would show the way to reconciliation and resolution..." write Mariyosh & Angeline in this Book Review on the Bihar-Bangalore connection book, ‘Booker Prize Winner ‘The White Tiger’.

The Greatest Literature
"As a Christian, there is an entrenched intention for my attraction towards literature. Would this be ultra-practical, if I concede that English literature had guided me towards the Bible? This whole new “ME” is due to the literature which I chose without snaking on science but helped me to be “JUST AS IAM” so that I could scream from a mountain top saying, Oh! My God, I’m utterly smitten by the “WORD OF GOD”. I can recall one of the incidents which made me to read the Bible. Once my professor told us sternly to read the Bible irrespective of our religious background; she said that if we failed to read the Bible as a literature student, there would be no reason for us to sit in the literature dept. Literally she told we were unfit. Those words kept ringing in my ears for two reasons...." writes Esther Dara (English Teacher, GEMS English School, Bihar) in this article in The CALL.

The Song that turned my Life
"The year was 1998 and I wished not to see yet another year. I wanted to end my life. But that day was to be etched in my memory forever and my life was to turn for the best.
As usual I went to school. One of our teachers had become a believer of Christ in those months. He gave an open invitation to the class to come and take part in prayer one evening. Prabhu took me there, to our school chapel where the prayer was going on. It was the very first time I was attending a prayer meeting like that.
Though I could not make much sense of it all one thing stayed in my mind. As I was cycling back home the words of the song that they sung kept ringing in my ears..." writes Mariyosh J (Chief Editor, The CALL) in this article in The CALL.

Student of Literature & the Scripture
"I praise God from deep down of my heart that in every aspect of my life He bestowed His blessings upon me, though am not worthy of it. He helped me to pass my graduation (Eng. Hons.) with first class marks and distinction in my P.G. program awarded with Gold Medal, Certificate of Merit and Certificate of Honour. It was given by the Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh.
When this ceremony was going on, 18th march 2015, I was speechless and my heart was praising God for His wonderful deeds in my life. I knew and read in the Bible several times that God’s makes impossible things possible but it was the first time I experienced that in my life. When I saw my name on the University site in the list of the selected students for gold medal, I started crying and my words were vanished and my tears were praising God because it was beyond my imagination. Three days before that day..." writes Blessy in this article in the MK Memoirs column of The CALL.

Practice What You Preach (and Sing)
"I began praising and worshiping God. While I was yet praising I heard God’s voice asking me to sing a particular song that I always liked to sing. It is a popular Hindi song even today: “Seva karenge pyare Prabhu ki mar be mitange pyare Prabhu may” (I will serve the Lord and am even prepared to die for the sake of the Lord). As I began to hum, God commanded me to stop. He said that I should never ever sing that song again.
I was shocked. He then said, “My daughter is fighting for her life and you refuse to give her one bottle of blood. How can you give your life for me?” I was ashamed of my thoughts. The insensitivity, the selfishness, the pretense of being sincere when I gave the blood samples all shocked me and brought me to the realization that my inner man was still so spiritually weak. I began to cry..." writes Bro. D. Augustine Jebakumar (General Secretary, GEMS) in this article in The CALL.

Arts Special of The CALL
The fallen ‘angel’ picture has created quite a controversy in the past weeks with the heights of ignorance reaching its peak of people believing it to be real! It is an art work, a sculpture of the Chinese conceptual artists Sun Yuan & Peng Yu. Taking “Art” to be “fallen” and “unchristian” the church has largely come to either disassociate itself with arts or to limit it. The cause to bring back arts into the Christian thinking with biblical perspectives and to see the call of the church in this form is the case for this issue “Arts Special”.
Art is everywhere; walking through the Phoenix Market City in Chennai or the Marina Bay, Singapore or the IGI Airport, New Delhi, the shopper or the casual stroller or the traveller definitely stumbles upon the art forms installed here. But art is not limited to modernity or urbanity and this is evidenced through the tribal art forms of Bihar and Jharkhand that adorn the Cover of this issue. And the Bible celebrates the arts of ordinary people; the first recorded song writer of the Bible, Moses was a slave, the greatest hymnist David was a shepherd.
This issue of The CALL carries works on literature, performing arts, visual, media and culinary arts. Among its literary works this issue brings two poems, ‘Walking Thru Darkness’ and ‘Paid to be Away’. ‘The Song that turned my Life’ is a testimonial to how Scripture based songs can touch & transform people. A new feature in this issue is the Book Review on the Bihar-Bangalore connection book, ‘Booker Prize Winner ‘The White Tiger’’.
The Greek word for ‘Hypocrite’ is the technical term for the performance artist, a stage actor. The lead article ‘Practice What You Preach (and Sing)’ narrates two incidents from the life of Brother Augustine Jebakumar and shows how what we teach or preach or sing need to align with our life.
A treat for children is the Comic Strip in the Children’s Chronicles column, ‘Pyari’s Secret’. The Magnifying Glass column article ‘Reaching Children, Creatively’ features the use of arts in the ministry among children by GEMS.
‘The Greatest Literature’ recounts the reminiscence of an English teacher and ‘English Literature & my Bible Study’ of a University Verbal Faculty. There are also treats to the taste buds in the Culinary Arts section, but with a difference – the taste of eternal life in three narrations!
For people in arts it is easy to be carried away by the satisfaction of producing an art or by the appreciation it brings. The Scribe Baruch & Prophet Jeremiah belonged to the few who harkened to the word of God. While the entire book of Jeremiah is prophecies concerning Judah, in the 45th chapter we see a prophecy directly concerning Jeremiah’s Scribe, Baruch. This is the word of God to Baruch, “And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them…” (45:5).
The MK Memoir article of a GEMS MK ‘Student of Literature & the Scripture’ ends rightly with these words, “…make me an instrument, for your glory alone” and this needs to be the aspiration of every Christian in arts, “Arts for the glory of God”.
The Director’s Desk encourages the readers in ‘Heart of Art’ to “develop and apply the God given potentials with creativity and innovation through empowerment” and brings in balanced biblical perspectives to the arts of mentoring, giving, preaching, witnessing, leading and administering so that the Lord may build you as an “instrument for His noble purposes” (2 Tim 2:21).
Art is Creativity and God is the source of creativity. The art of God starts with the Creation and culminates at the Calvary and the Cross reconciles this torn world and troubled lives to God. Francis A. Schaeffer summarises beautifully in ‘Arts & the Bible’, “A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. An art work can be a doxology in itself.”

Biblical Governance
"When man rebelled and sinned against God, the image of God was not lost, but marred resulting in chaos not only in man but also in the creation as a whole. As the populace increased God began looking for someone to stand in the gap - to bring people back to His original purposes for them. As a first step He chose and saved Noah along with his family from the judgment for sin of universal flood that God sent. The next was Abraham whom God chose to restore human race to Him and to His purposes: “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing…. and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you” (Gen.12:2-3). God further promised that kings will be born among his descendants. Here we see that kings, kingdoms or nations are not products of human ingenuity but God’s plan for human race." writes Christopher Murugan (Social Development Officer, GEMS) in this article in The CALL.
He goes on to talk about the transition from theocracy to monarchy, God's purpose for rulers and on the call for Christians to involve.

God’s Cabinet
"For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
This (God's Cabinet) is an attempt in looking at the ministries of a nation’s government in the light of the Scriptures. The Bible clearly talks about governance in all areas and gives direction to every issue. Reading and meditating through these verses in this light gives new perspective, the means and hope for change and good governance." writes Mariyosh J (Chief Editor, The CALL) in this article in The CALL.

MK in Mission
"Being the firstborn or to call myself the first MK (Missionary Kid) of GEMS has always given me a pride, but the pressure to set an example to other MKs has always placed a fear on the other side. I had always been prepared to sacrifice for others...
Let me tell about my first experience of working with a mission organization. It was a fresh new experience, though only for 6 months. We were mostly involved in facilitating programs and in training work. I could not stay there for long because most of the programs were only in meetings or papers and implementation and action was not there. It was a good ground for me to connect to various people and organizations. But if the decisions taken remained in the board rooms and presentations, it would hamper the growth of the ministry and the kingdom of God. Due to this I could not stick on to that organization for long, as that was not the background in which I was raised." writes Goforth Jebakumar (Administrator & Finance Coordinator, GEMS) in this article in the The CALL.
He talks about Administration in Missions, Lessons from the Corporate and ends with a word for other MKs.

Government On His Shoulders
“It is amazing to know that God’s ways of functioning in Creation, Salvation, and Glorification are the prime resources to learn the principles of good administration. His first advent was prophesised with “Good Governance (Administration)” (Is. 9:6 &7, Dan. 7:13, 14). Governance comes FIRST in the list there. His final Advent also promises the same (Is. 11:4-16).” writes Dr. Ashok Kumar (Director of Missions, GEMS) in this article in The CALL.
He adds, “My attempt here is not to write yet another model but to pen few indicators from Scripture which had been applied, approved and applauded for ages in administration.” and gives the Seven Indicators of Scripture based Administration.

Are Christians Anti-Patriotic?
“These are days where the ideals of “national spirit” or “nationalism” are being much hyped about both in political and social echelons. At the same time there seems to be a deliberate accusation that Christians are without this national spirit. There was a similar outlook in the aftermath of partition, post-independence, where Muslims were identified with Pakistan and Christians with the British. But, in today’s context, though there is a general identity of Christians with the west, there seems to be particular fixation with the Americas. As a result we are increasingly seeing an opposition to all that is Christian in the fabric of our nation.” writes Bro. D. Augustine Jebakumar (Founder / Gen. Secretary, GEMS) in this article in The CALL.
He goes on to add, “Just like a specific group opposed the building of the Temple, in the days of Ezra (chapter 4), on certain grounds, today those who oppose the work of the gospel also put forth four arguments…” and places the four arguments and answers them.

The Administration Special of The CALL
Administration Special – the idea for this issue came up when the Prime Minister of India announced 25th of December as Good Governance Day. Though there were lots of hues and cries from some political parties and groups for trying to reduce the importance of Christmas, there were others who share this opinion that the birth of Jesus Christ quite well signifies good governance. Prophesying on the birth of the Messiah Isaiah says, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (9:6)
Drawing on this inspiration this issue of The CALL presents various perspectives on the themes of Administration or Governance. Here we talk about Church, Corporate & Country governance. Why is this so important a subject to address? The recent judgment on India’s biggest corporate frauds, the Satyam Computers scam, allegedly worth over $1.5 billion sentencing its founder Ramalinga Raju to seven years imprisonment, serves as a warning.
The recurring themes in Narayan Murthy’s book ‘A Better India: A Better World’, the founder of Infosys, talks about good corporate and public governance, where he advocates transparency, integrity, credibility, trustworthiness, making sacrifices, good value system, clear conscience and character. What do you think is the source of these? Talking in this line, the article ‘Government on His Shoulders’ prescribes the Seven Indicators of Scripture based Administration. The MK Memoirs column brings out the personal experiences and expressions of a GEMS MK from his corporate and mission work in the article ‘MK in Mission’.
‘God’s Cabinet’ looks at the various ministries of a nation’s government in the light of the Scriptures that promises change and good governance. The article on ‘Biblical Governance’ shows the transition from theocracy to monarchy and gives the call to involve in nation building.
While we live in hostile times it is essential that we consider the question the lead article poses ‘Are Christians Anti-Patriotic?’ and heed to the author’s counsel that “it is imperative that we, as Christians, live as responsible and caring citizens in this nation”. To be responsible and caring requires, many a times, to be daring. ‘Risk Takers or Care Takers or Under Takers?’ is a trumpet call waking up sleeping giants of mediocrity and administration red tapes.
When we are faced with failing politicians, corrupt bureaucrats, greedy & manipulative managers there is very little chance for good governance and development. Quoting Murthy again from his book (pg. 191), “The rule of law can only defeat the perverse mind. It cannot defeat the perversity of the heart”. Hence we are posed with the question, is there any hope for change?
The life of one another person who shares two things in common with Ramalinga Raju gives us hope. Raju is a management graduate from Ohio University and the Ohio student protests were what culminated in Watergate Scandal, a major political scandal, which led to the discovery of multiple abuses of power by the Nixon administration. This led to the resignation of the US President Richard Nixon which indicted seven of his aides including Charles Colson who served as a Special Counsel to the President. As Colson was facing arrest he received a copy of C.S. Lewis’ book ‘Mere Christianity’ after reading which Colson committed his life to Christ and later founded ‘Prison Fellowship’. Colson writes in his book ‘God and Government’, “If Christians today understood this distinction between the role of the private Christian citizen and the Christian in government, they might sound less like medieval crusaders. If secularists understood correctly the nature of Christian public duty they would not fear, but welcome responsible Christian political involvement.”
‘Is Politics or Public Administration meant for Christians?’ not only answers this question satisfactorily but makes the case for Christians to consider this call, to witness and to be the right kind of leaven.
This is a voice and we wish and pray for many echoes to follow and raise God’s echelons!

The Problem with the Bible Seminary
"The pioneers of the modern missionary movement did not establish a Bible seminary/institute or school. In order to bless India, those Calvinist-Baptists founded Serampore College in 1818. Their leader, William Carey, was one of the greatest Bible translators/publishers of all times. Yet, along with teaching the Bible, that cobbler-turned-linguist taught botany, horticulture, astronomy, forestry, and agriculture..." writes Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi and goes onto answer the questions, 'Did their theology separate “sacred” subject of divinity from “secular” studies?' and 'Was holistic mission that cared for the poor already on the margins?'

Fed in His Word
"“Bible Reading and Prayer should become a part and parcel of your life” was the regular advice our Principal kept before us before we went home from school for any vacation. I didn’t understand the essence of this concept fully but this statement however stayed fresh in my mind...
I’ve heard some missionary kids say “I wish my parents were not missionaries” or “Why did my parents become missionaries?” or “It’s we who are sacrificing and not parents.” But I have never thought in that way; maybe because I knew the mind of God and His plans that God revealed to me through my Bible readings and meditation." writes Angeline Mariyosh in this issue of The CALL where she narrates how her time spent with the Bible nourished her soul in times of troubles & loneliness and how God kept directing and assuring her.

Measure Your Growth
"How much have you grown? How tall are you? Do you want to know? Measure your height with a right scale or a measuring tape to know your exact height. That will tell you how much you have grown in stature since birth or in the last year or two. But there is another measure of growth in which God is interested in. Have you ever wondered, how good (or bad) are you?..." writes Christial Christopher in this children's article in The CALL and shows the right way to measure and measure up!

Word View or World View?
"Since printing press was invented in the mid-14th century Bible has always remained the best seller in the world. That is not the reason why we esteem the Bible. We esteem it because it is the life giving WORD of God. We all know that the word ‘Bible’ means collection of books or library of books. Bible is therefore a library of 66 books by about 40 different authors from different ages, cultures and languages, written over a period of 1500 years running over 1000 pages depending upon the language, the version, and the font size. Yet one can read from the Book of Genesis to the Book of Revelation as if it was a single book – as if it is a single story. How is it possible for such a collection of books with such diversity of authors, cultures, backgrounds, languages, and time periods to read like a single narration unless there is something gloriously miraculous about it? This, among many others, is unique about this library and a marvel with no parallel anywhere in the world.
One question that keeps bothering many is, is the Bible really the Word of God. Let me, at the outset, rattle you by saying the answer is both a yes and a no. Before you jump to conclusions and castigate me as a blasphemer read further.." writes Philip Pereira.

Familiarity Breeds Contempt Or…?
"We are living in the times of fulfilment of this prophecy of Habakkuk. With the increase in the means of communication, there is an increase in the spread of God’s Word throughout the world. 24X7 television channels and radio stations and internet sites broadcast messages from the Bible. Magazines, newspapers, posters, carrying the messages of the Bible are printed and circulated in abundance. And as always Bible is the most printed and the most translated book in the world...
But still the Bible cautions us saying that when the earth in filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, there is a possibility that, “You are filled with shame instead of glory.” (Habakkuk 2:16a)" writes Mariyosh J.

Is God Cruel?
"More often than not even the readers of the Bible can come to the same conclusion that God, whom the Bible talks about, especially in the Old Testament, is cruel. Is God really cruel? The answer to this question is not straight forward, because the alternative is to project God as benevolent. The proponents and opponents of either position can find enough verses, or even passages, from the Bible to support their respective positions. Many, who seek to criticize or speak against Christianity, carefully look for those passages where it is possible to portray God in a negative light. But, as a Christian, what do we think when we come across these difficult passages in the Bible. How are we to do deal with events in the Bible where God does seem unrelenting and merciless?" writes T. Emerson, who specialized in Old Testament in his Masters in Theology.

Searching the Scriptures
"God has always been a mystery through the generations to the inquiring minds of people, from the lowliest to the highest, but still remains a puzzle unanswerable. Is there a reason why man wants to know God? Is it an intellectual quest or a need deep within?...
Religion, so vital in the lives of millions of people around the world, has been the subject crucial for many philosophers and scholars throughout the ages...
On the other hand, there are people who keep searching the truth from one religion to another, from one practice to another, and this search can go on until the absolute truth is found...
Scriptures are the ultimate source to find the absolute truth which is God Himself. If there is a God who created the universe, then, in my view, He must reveal Himself to the humanity..." writes Christopher Murugan who is specialized in Philosophy & Religion in his Masters and Theology.

The Fifth Gospel
"The indispensable gift from God, next only to His Son and His Spirit, are the Scriptures. No wonder, the Bible begins with Creation through His Word and ends with Caution for His Word (Rev 22:19).
Let me remind you of a few essentials to bear in mind and to practice that can raise you up as the “Fifth Gospel” to be read by everyone around you (2 Corinthians 3:2). Some of you, who read this, may have had failures in doing so. But let me encourage you to firm up your girdle today because Jesus, the descendant of David, who is also the resurrected Saviour, has conquered every challenge in this earth (2 Timothy 2:8) and He will enable you to be successful in every step of your path." writes Dr. Ashok Kumar(Director of Missions, GEMS) in this Scripture Special issue of The CALL.
